Border Woodturners Open Day & Inter-club Competition
Many thanks to the Border Woodturners for organising another superb open day at Brampton. The quality of artistry was better than ever in the Inter-club Competition with a stunning display of turning from seven clubs. Wear Valley Woodturners came a creditable third this year.

We are most grateful to Walter Hall for kindly giving permission for us to use his photographs of the five Wear Valley Woodturners exhibits reproduced below.

Members may be interested to know that our friends at the Border Woodturners over in Brampton, now have an excellent and very informative website. Click HERE to visit the website.

The Border Woodturners organise and host a superb Open Day at Brampton which this year falls on Sunday 27th October 2013 starting at 10.00am. Do support this event which includes demonstrations and trade stands as well as inspirational displays of woodturning. Lunches and and other refreshments are provided.

The event also incorporates the annual Borders Inter-club Woodturning Competition. The Wear Valley Woodturners won this competition last year so perhaps now is the time for WVW members to start thinking about making pieces for this years event to see if we can repeat last years success!

For Sale page added to website (7th July 2013)
WVW members can now advertise woodturning related items for sale on the website. Click HERE for more details and to view current advertisements.

Monday 17th June
Demonstration by Ian Forster
Ian showed us how to turn a variety of very attractive candlesticks using spindle turning techniques for the stems and 'faceplate' turning for the bases. The following photographs by Arthur Bowes give a flavour of the excellent demonstration given by Ian.

The tenon of the completed candlestick stem has been jam-fitted into the hole drilled into the previously turned base. This allows the base to be shaped and integrated with the design of the attached stem.

Base shaped to match the stem Completion

The base, jam-fitted to the stem, has been skilfully turned to match the styling of the stem. Note how the point of contact between stem and base is cunningly masked under a bead on the stem.
