Andrew Hall Wassail Bowl, December 2014 Andrew Hall's Demonstration, 15th December 2014

Andrew demonstrated the making of a Wassail Bowl and explained the word Wassail (Old English wæs hæl, literally 'be you healthy') refers both to the salute 'Waes Hail' and to the drink of wassail, a hot mulled cider traditionally drunk as an integral part of wassailing, an ancient southern English drinking ritual intended to ensure a good cider apple harvest the following year. A Wassail bowl was a large drinking cup which was passed around at wassailing.

7th September 2014
Message from our Secretary, Allan Joicey
Hello everyone. Firstly - any response to this message should be made by clicking HERE or by telephone to 01913734423.

This note is to appraise you of a number of issues which have recently presented themselves.

September 2014 Demonstration change
The guest demonstrator for the 15th September (Simon Whitehead) has an ongoing health issue and we have been informed by his wife that he is not now available. This information came too late to hire a replacement but the meeting will still go ahead as planned. There is enough expertise in the club to satisfy this shortfall and you might also like to bring any surplus tools/equipment for a "swap shop" or "bring and buy" session on the night. No items to be left on site.

Sunderland Woodturners Association has been Wound Up
You may or may not be aware that, at a meeting held on Monday 1st September 2014, it was decided by the members present, that Sunderland Woodturners Association was no longer able to function and had to be wound up with immediate effect and the assets disposed of. This is sad news for many members but the final decision seems to have been hastened by the announcement that the building in which the meetings were held, was to suffer a "change of use" and that a notice to quit had been issued. Any queries should be addressed to SWT direct. Contact details are on their Website which can be located by clicking HERE.

Wear Valley were very gratefull to be gifted additional equipment as a result of this decision and we are anxious to involve all of our members not only in utilising this new equipment, but also in deciding the best way forward for our club. What would you like to see/do/change on meeting nights ? Your thoughts and ideas are paramount to this development and we look forward to hearing them.

Wear Valley Woodturners AGM
This note also serves to give notice to members that the AGM of Wear Valley Woodturners will take place at Bearpark community centre on Monday 20th October at 6-30 pm. Any notices, submissions, rule or constitution changes, appointments, resignations or agenda items should be submitted in writing to the secretary at least two weeks prior to the date of the AGM.

Please tell anyone you know who doesn't have email about this communication. We have a lot to talk about.
Regards to all
Allan Joicey (sec)

There was an excellent turnout for Mark Baker's Sunday Seminar demonstrations on the 18th May. Mark is well known as editor of the Woodturning Magazine. He began by demonstrating how to make a large vessel with a lid and followed that with making a smaller "votive offering" bowl. He said the inspiration for the design of both bowls came from ancient pottery he had seen.  Many thanks to club member Keith Phillips for the photographs.
